New Federal Guidance Paves the Way for Cleaning Up Aluminum Manufacturing
U.S. Department of Treasury and IRS release final rules for the 45X Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit, offering critical funding to modernize the industry and ensure its competitiveness on global stage
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Department of Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released expanded guidance on the Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit, Section 45X of the Internal Revenue Code. This expanded guidance increases investment in the domestic primary aluminum industry, providing essential support for an industry that has been on the brink of collapse in recent years. As a vital component of the emerging zero-carbon economy, primary aluminum has faced significant challenges over the years, with outdated facilities still largely reliant on fossil fuels shuttering as result of volatile energy prices.
We urge primary aluminum producers to seize this opportunity to modernize their operations, embrace cutting-edge technologies, repower with renewable energy, and significantly reduce pollution.
In response to the announcement, Annie Sartor, Aluminum Campaign Director at Industrious Labs, released the following statement:
“The expanded 45X guidance paves the way for primary aluminum producers to take needed steps toward modernizing and decarbonizing their operations. The decline of this industry has affected thousands of working people and countless local communities with layoffs and curtailments, and it urgently needs a lifeline. Investments to clean up and modernize the sector are a critical step to rebound from decades of decline. We wholeheartedly welcome this opportunity for producers to modernize and succeed.”
